In-Home Annual Fire Prevention Inspections

The office of the Collin County Fire Marshal will perform an in-home fire inspection at no charge for the following:

Foster Care
Adoption
Child Day Care Facilities
Adult Day Care Facilities

The following is a list of items we will be looking for upon inspection. If you have any questions, please contact our office:

1. **All exits, fire escapes, hallways, corridors, stairwells, stairway doors, etc., used in connection with an exit are free from obstructions/storage, kept closed, not blocked or wedged open, and in good repair.
2. **Required exit signs and emergency lighting are properly illuminated and operational.
3. **Locking devices or hardware do not prevent or inhibit egress.
4. Open flame heating devices and space heaters are not installed or used.
5. Laundry room is kept clean and all equipment free from lint and dust.
6. Required fire extinguishers are maintained and serviced regularly.
7. Facility has an adequate water supply for fire fighting capability.
8. Facility has an approved written fire and disaster plan.
9. Electrical wiring and equipment are in safe condition and meet current code.
10. Electrical extension cords are in good condition, not frayed, spliced, or overloaded.
11. Covers are provided for all electrical switches, convenience outlets and junction boxes.
12. Fire alarm system (if in place) is operative and properly tagged by licensed alarm company.
13. Fire alarms are appropriately located in facility and in working order.
14. Gas heating units are checked for proper operation as required.

**These items are applicable to adult or child in-home day care facilities. NOTE: If you are requesting an inspection for foster care / adoption requirements, please forward a copy of the State form along with a completed In-Home Fire Inspection Application to our office.
