National Volunteer Blood Donor Month

January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month - "Give Blood…The Gift of Life"

American Association of Blood Banks, America's Blood Centers, and American Red Cross host National Volunteer Blood Donor Month to encourage donors to give or pledge to give blood. If you are at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health, you may be eligible to donate blood. Celebrate National Volunteer Blood Donors Month by "Giving the Gift of Life" and encouraging your friends and family to donate as well.

Top Ten Reasons You Should Become a Blood Donor this Month:

  1. January is a difficult month to collect donations due to the holidays, poor weather and more people getting sick.
  2. Donated blood has a shelf life of approximately 42 days, so the supply needs to be constantly replenished.
  3. Approximately 38,000 units - 5,000 gallons - of Red Blood Cells are needed each day and more than 26.5 million units of blood components are transfused every year.
  4. 4.5 million American lives are saved each year with blood transfusions.
  5. Fewer than 5 percent of healthy Americans eligible to donate blood actually donate each year.
  6. Just one unit of donated blood can help save the lives of up to three people.
  7. Approximately every three seconds someone needs blood.
  8. You are eligible to donate blood every 56 days.
  9. You can save lives.
  10. The next life saved could be yours.
