National Cancer Survivors Day - June 4, 2006
Join us in celebrating the 19th annual National Cancer Survivors Day,
June 4, 2006! National Cancer Survivors DayŽ is an annual, worldwide Celebration
of Life that is held in hundreds of communities throughout the United
States, Canada, and other participating countries. Participants unite
in a symbolic event to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis
can be a reality. Almost half of all men and more than one-third of all
women in America are at risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, according
to the American Cancer Society. In the United States, 9.6 million people
are living with a history of cancer. Almost 1000 cases are diagnosed in
Collin County alone every year. These survivors will be the first to tell
you that you can have a fulfilling life after a diagnosis of cancer. (According
to the National Cancer Survivor's Day Foundation, a "cancer survivor"
is anyone living with a history of cancer - from the moment of diagnosis
through the remainder of life.)
Cancer Survivorship Issues
Major advances in cancer prevention, early detection and treatment have
resulted in longer survival. However, surviving cancer can leave a host
of problems in its wake. Physical, emotional, and financial hardships
often persist for years after diagnosis and treatment. Survivors may face
many challenges including access to cancer specialists and promising new
treatments, denial of health and life insurance coverage, financial hardships
long after the initial diagnosis and treatment, employment problems, psychological
struggles and the strain on personal relationships and the profound fear
of recurrence. However, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives
even though they still face many challenges.

The Cost of Cancer
In Texas, the total estimated direct medical costs due to cancer in 1998 were $4.9 billion,
and indirect costs from lost productivity were $9.1 billion. That is a total of $14 billion
per year that is attributable to cancer, and is a large proportion of health care expenditures
for the state. Tobacco use cessation programs, prevention and control education and early
screening and detection programs are greatly needed to help reduce these costs.

of Cancer in Texas report provided by the Texas Department of Health.
