Travel Medicine

Are you planning a trip abroad? Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, it is important to make sure your health is protected. Collin County Health Care Services believes in educating our residents about the health risks they may encounter while traveling. Prevention is the key to protecting your health.

Plan Ahead

As soon as you start planning a trip, take the time to make arrangements for a consultation with one of our travel medicine nurses. Some vaccines and preventive medicines need to be started well in advance of your trip in order to be fully effective. Ideally your appointment should be scheduled at least 2 months before your departure. However, even if your departure date is near, it is important to make an appointment as soon as possible. These consultations are for your benefit. It is important to do whatever you can in order to protect your health.

Importance of Travel Medicine

  • Some diseases that are no longer a threat in the United States are serious problems in developing countries.
  • Contaminated food and drinks are sources of infection. Typhoid fever, Hepatitis A, and travelers' diarrhea are transmitted in this manner.
  • Areas with inadequate sanitation and little access to clean water can pose a serious threat to the health of travelers.
  • Some countries may require proof of immunity against certain conditions.

Key Factors When Traveling

There are many factors to consider when determining the risks to which travelers may be exposed. These factors include:

  • Geographical destination
  • Duration of the visit
  • Location within the country (urban vs. rural)
  • Type of accommodations (luxury vs. economy)
  • Behavioral risk factors
  • Traveler's medical history

Some conditions may not produce symptoms until after your return. It is important to meet with a physician who knows of your travel history if you experience signs of illness, especially within two months of your return.
