The following are examples of potential breeding places
for mosquitoes. To help prevent the spread of the West Nile Virus, look
for places in your yard and around your home which contain standing water
and drain them. Residents are also encouraged to report standing water,
illegal dumping, and increased mosquito activity by calling the County's
West Nile Hotline at 972-548-5525.
Slides or other playground equipment can collect
water. Be sure to drain these areas after a rain shower or after watering
the lawn.
Lawn furniture that is not maintained can
also accumlate water. Keep lawn equipment and furniture in good condition
and in its proper place.
The ground underneath gutter downspouts can accumulate water too.
Place splash guards under each downspout to disperse water evenly
and prevent collection.
Stacks of wood can age and form holes in which
water can accumulate. Discard aged wood and store newer wood in a
location where it is protected from rain and water.
Look for buckets and other items inside truck
beds and other heavy equipment which can collect water. Check these
problem spots after rain storms and drain them as needed.
Boats contain many places for water
to accumulate. Keep boats covered and be sure to drain them completely
after a rain storm or trip to the lake.
Plants that receive too much water can be
a hazard. Try to avoid overwatering plants and drain drip trays
if necessary.
