Local eatery to be designated a Collin County landmark
(McKINNEY, TX) - Bill Smith's Café will officially become a Collin County landmark on Saturday, June 9, after more than 50 years of serving up plate lunches and homestyle cooking to local patrons.
County Commissioner Joe Jaynes will officiate at a noontime ceremony to honor what is now the oldest, continuously owned family eatery in the county.
Bill and Jeanette Smith founded the eatery in August 1956 when 1500 W. University Avenue was in the middle of a cotton patch on the outskirts of McKinney. The café debuted with $1.45 T-Bone steaks, 85-cent lunch specials, and soon became a popular roadside attraction for hungry locals.
Today, Bill Smith, Jr., runs the restaurant and lunchtime business is just as full of regular customers as it was when its flashing neon sign went up a half-century ago.
