Distemper outbreak prompts weekend vaccination clinic at county’s animal shelter

(McKinney, TX) – Reports of outbreaks of distemper in nearby cities and surrounding counties this year have prompted Collin County Animal Services to host a low-cost vaccination clinic Saturday at the county’s animal shelter.

Reports of epidemic levels of sick raccoons carrying the highly contagious virus have surfaced since February from Dallas to Plano and Allen. While the virus is not a threat to humans, it can be fatal to many dog and cat breeds.

Saturday’s clinic, held by the Texas Coalition for Animal Protection (TCAP), will run from 10 a.m. to Noon Saturday at 4750 Community Ave., McKinney, TX 75071.

The cost of the DHPP -- Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus – (for dogs), or the Feline FVRCP Combination (for cats) vaccine is $10. No reservations are required.

DHPP, commonly called the “distemper shot,” is a combination vaccine that protects against the four diseases, and is given to puppies in a series of three vaccines and then given every year to adult dogs. For cats, the FVRCP is another combination vaccine that also protects against common upper respiratory diseases such as Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Chlamydia, and Panleukopenia, that cats can catch even if they live indoors.
