Collin County leaders “celebrate” construction of 121-Custer Road project
(McKinney, TX) - Local, state and regional leaders came together today to “celebrate” the construction of frontage roads for State Highway 121 and a Custer Road overpass in Collin County. Phase I of the two-phase project began earlier this year. The more than $46 million project will not only expand the highly traveled roadway, it will also provide improved access from the north and south.
“This project could not become a reality without the cooperation of all the entities involved,” says Collin County Judge Ron Harris. “There is no better word to describe this than cooperation.” Collin County, the cities of Allen, Frisco, Plano and McKinney, the Texas Department of Transportation, the North Texas Transit Authority and land owners all worked together to make this project come to fruition.
The idea for expanding State Highway 121 has been in the planning process since 1986 in an effort to link DFW Airport to McKinney. “It’s 26 miles of progress,” says Collin County Commissioner Phyllis Cole. “The initiative began when we created a task force back in the 1980’s. We’ve been working closely with groups such as the Texas Department of Transportation and land owners. Over the years, the expansion project has made its way east.”
“By expanding State Highway 121, we not only open a better means of transportation, we provide an incentive for businesses and corporations to set-up shop here … knowing they can have easy access to any part of the Metroplex,” says Collin County Commissioner Joe Jaynes.
The first phase of the project is expected to be complete by September 2005. Phase II of the project will expand State Highway 121 from the Dallas North Tollway to Custer Road. The second part of the project is expected to begin later this year.
