Collin County West Nile Virus Update
(McKinney, Texas) Collin County Health Care Services, the public health department in Collin County has received notification of the first West Nile positive mosquitoes in Collin County. The mosquitoes were submitted from the 75082 zip code by the City of Richardson Health Department.
In July of 2003, two crows from the 75023 zip code and one blue jay from the 75075 zip code had tested positive for the virus. Bird testing has been discontinued by the Texas Department of Health (TDH).
The first human case of West Nile Virus in Collin County during 2003 was reported in the 75070 zip code and was confirmed by the Texas Department of Health (TDH) on 8/26/2003. The individual is recovering at home. A second human case of West Nile Fever was reported 8/27/2003 from the 75069 zip code and is also being investigated. The second case is not yet confirmed by the TDH.
Collin County Healthcare services urge all residents to take precautions against mosquito bites:
- Drain all standing water.
- Dress in light colored, long sleeve clothing when outdoors.
- Use a mosquito repellant that contains DEET.
- Stay indoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
