Collin County introduces the "Name the Camp Contest"

(McKinney, TX) - Residents throughout Collin County are invited to submit ideas for naming a new youth camp. In 2001, Collin County citizens approved the issuance of bonds for developing a camp. Since that time, the Commissioners’ Court established the camp advisory board, which oversees the planning and construction of the facility. But, the advisory board wants to leave the naming of the camp up to the residents.

The camp, which is an outdoor school, is located northwest of Westminster. It’s scheduled to begin operations in 2005 under the direction of the YMCA. County residents may submit a name along with a one-page typed or written explanation on why the name is important. The camp advisory board will select the best name and submit it to the Commissioners’ Court for final approval. If more than one person enters the selected name, the name with the best supporting explanation will be the one chosen. The winner will be recognized during the camp’s groundbreaking, tentatively scheduled for October 17th.

The estimated 450-acre campsite can be accessed from the south via FM 2862 and from the east via FM 3133. Lodging facilities for overnight stays, nature trails, water experiences, environmental studies and other amenities are all integral components of the camp’s design.

The mission of the camp is to provide life-enhancing outdoor educational and recreational experiences in and for Collin County children and families.

Entries may be emailed to camp@collincountytx.gov by noon, September 19th, or mailed to: Camp Naming Contest, Public Information Office, 210 S. McDonald Street, McKinney, TX 75069. All mailed entries must be postmarked by September 17th.
