Collin County celebrates National Public Health Week with services and programs

(McKinney, TX) - Collin County Health Care Services will celebrate National Public Health Week, April 4-8, 2005, with a number of services and programs. This year’s theme is “Empowering Americans to live stronger, longer.”

“During this time, we want to encourage persons to visit a physician for an annual check-up,” says Health Care Services Director Candy Blair. “We hope that by addressing a different health issue each day, we will be able to provide residents with important information they can discuss with their physicians.”

Each day during National Public Health week, the county, along with local health care organizations, will provide the following programs:

Monday, April 4, 2005 The focus will be cancer prevention.

The Baylor Sammons Mobile Breast Imaging Center will be parked outside of the Collin County Health Care Clinic, 825 N. McDonald Street in McKinney from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Breast screenings will be offered to women ages 35 and over. For details and to schedule an appointment, please call 1-800-422-9567. The cost is $99, if not covered by insurance.

Experts with the Medical Center of Plano will hold a program on cancer prevention and early detection at 7:30 p.m. The program will be held in the Community Classroom, Suite 170, 4001 West 15th Street in Plano (NW corner of Coit and 15th streets). “Cancer Prevention and Early Detection” will be presented by Cathy McLaughlin, RN, and P.K. Koger, RN. The public is invited to attend.

Tuesday, April 5, 2005 The focus will be accident prevention.

Presbyterian Hospital of Plano will offer free child seat checks from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. outside the Collin County Health Care Clinic, 825 N. McDonald Street in McKinney. Certified child passenger technicians will answer questions about child safety seats and teach participants how to install children’s seats correctly in vehicles. Appointments are required. Wednesday, April 6, 2005 The focus will be heart disease.

Experts with the Medical Center of Plano will conduct a program on heart disease at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Classroom, Suite 170, 4001 West 15th Street in Plano (NW corner of Coit and 15th streets). HEARTLINK(tm) Center at Medical Center of Plano is highly recognized for cardiology services. The program title is “Heart Works” and will provide information on prevention, education, diet and lifestyle changes for a healthier heart. The presenters are Phyllis Tasekoff, RN, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and cardiology department clinical educators. The public is invited to attend.

Thursday, April 7, 2005 The focus will be diabetes.

Collin County Medical Examiner Dr. William Rohr will lead a discussion on diabetes at the Plano Senior Center, 401 West 16th Street in Plano. The discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the Geriatric Wellness Center. The public is invited to attend.

Friday, April 8, 2005 The focus will be nutrition.

Fourth grade students in Collin County have been invited to participate in a poster contest. Submissions will be displayed in county facilities.
