Collin County to offer free wireless service to court facility visitors

(McKinney, TX) – Beginning June 13th, Collin County will offer free wireless service to persons visiting three county facilities. The McDonald Street courthouse, University Drive Courts Facility and Annex B of the main courthouse will all have wireless access.

Now, citizens called for jury duty, reporters, attorneys and others conducting county business will all be able to access email and the Internet via their laptops or portable electronic devices.

“We wanted to provide residents with the flexibility to juggle their professional and personal responsibilities with their civic duties,” says Collin County Commissioner Jerry Hoagland.

To access the wireless network, persons will need to follow three simple steps:

  1. A person must have a computer or PDA with 802.11b wireless capability. An existing device may already have this capability built-in. If not, an 802.11b wireless network adapter is available at most major electronic retail stores.
  2. If the device is wireless-enabled, a user will need to set the computer’s SSID (or network identifier) to “ccpublic”. Please refer to the wireless network card vendor documentation for specific instructions.
  3. Launch the Internet browser after reviewing and accepting the user acceptance policy.

Collin County does not provide wireless access to streaming video or audio. Viewing of inappropriate material is prohibited.
