Jury Convicts Rains County Man of Capital Murder

(McKINNEY, Texas) -- A Collin County jury took little more than an hour today to convict a Rains County man of the 1990 shotgun slaying of a 20-year-old man in Wylie.

The capital murder conviction drew an automatic life prison sentence for Ronnie Jene Shy II, 36, of Point, Texas, since prosecutors did not seek the death penalty for the execution-style shooting of David Grubstein. Assistant District Attorneys John Schomburger and Lisa King tried the case for the State.

Shy and a 36-year-old Austin woman were indicted in December 2006 for the 16-year-old murder after Wylie police and the Collin County District Attorney's Cold Case Unit re-opened the unsolved case. A third defendant connected to the murder was indicted three months later. The two co-defendants have yet to stand trial for their roles in Grubstein's death.

"In the last four years, our cold case unit has re-opened nine murder cases that occurred between 1981 and 1990," said Collin County Criminal District Attorney John Roach. "We've won a conviction for murder or capital murder in every case except one in which the defendant died after indictment but before trial."

Days after family members reported Grubstein missing in August 1990, his body was found near some railroad tracks on the east side of Wylie near Lake Lavon.

Authorities were initially unable to collect enough evidence for an indictment. By applying modern techniques with old fashioned police work, Wylie Police and the D.A.'s Cold Case Unit teamed up to pore over evidence and re-interview witnesses in late 2006.
