Tons of special rock material is placed on the roadway.
| |
ROCK DELIVERY
This material is then graded smooth and compacted to make a good hard,
level base for the asphalt material.
Each “belly dump” can hold up to 13 tons of rock
CLOSE UPS OF ROCK BEING DEPOSITED
This material comes from several stockpiles around the county
LEVELLING THE ROCK
After the rock is deposited, grader makes ready to level the rock.
HERE COMES THE GRADER!
ROCK THICKNESS
The grader levels the newly deposited rock material to about 8" thickness.
The thickness depends upon how high the roadbed needs to be.
SLUSHING THE ROAD
The road is "slushed", that is, water is applied to the base.
This brings the “fines” to the surface where they will be compacted by heavy rollers.
COMPACTING THE SLUSH
The rollers compact the wet material until it is very smooth and hard,
making it ready for the coming asphalt.
FINAL RESULT
A nice smooth road surface ready for asphalt!
