Step 5: Asphalt Laydown
Preparation is everything! The actual “lay down” is a pretty fast procedure

SWEEPING THE ROAD
The road is first swept of excess rock and debris. This ensures that the special emulsion will adhere to the roadbed. The road is ready for the special emulsion. Dusty work, indeed!
EMULSION APPLICATION
The road emulsion is then applied to the road. This is very hot stuff and can’t be applied in cold or wet weather. This emulsion acts as the "glue" that grips the rock material to the road. Cars shouldn’t drive on this stuff when it’s wet!
CHIP BOX
This is the chip box that will actually lay down the rock to the road. Dump trucks full of rock material are hitched to the rear of the unit. The dump truck feeds the chip box as both units go down the road.
ATTACHING THE DUMP TRUCK TO THE CHIP BOX
APPLYING ROCK MATERIAL
The chip box/dump truck unit applies the rock to the road
NEWLY "SHOT" ASPHALT ROAD
This is what a newly "laid down" asphalt road looks like. Both sides of the road are “shot”.
FINAL STEP
Heavy rollers are used to further compact the applied rock to the road. JOB DONE!
