Reminder: Rural trash drop-off set for July 12th
Because of the July Fourth holiday, the folks at Public Works want to
remind residents who plan to drop off debris, brush and trash at the North
Texas Municipal Water District's landfill in Melissa that Julys
trash day will be Saturday, July 12th. Please make sure to check the instructions,
restrictions and schedule of this program listed further down on this
page.
In 2004, Collin County provided three Collection Sites
for our residents. Participation in this program was tremendously successful,
and at the same time over-whelming with regard to logistics, staffing
and increasing disposal costs. The vast amount of waste generated has
increased cost by more than 300%.
Recently, the cost to operate the collection sites at
Weston, Princeton, and Copeville exceeded $18,000 for this one-day event
with 440,000 pounds or 220 tons of waste collected. The $18,000 collection
event did not include employee wages or large equipment mobilization /
utilization cost associated in facilitating this event. In an effort to
control the escalating cost with providing this important service, Collin
County consolidated our three collection sites at Princeton, Weston and
Copeville, to one central location conveniently positioned just inside
the entrance to new landfill located at 3802 North Highway 121, Melissa.
Collin County contracted with the North Texas Municipal
Water District's landfill in Melissa to conduct once a month cleanup days
where all residents of Collin County can bring their items for disposal
at no cost. This agreement with the District reduces the current cost
of $18,000 per monthly event to $4,000 per event. The County will be able
to offer enhanced services at lower cost to tax payers. Scrap debris,
brush and yard trimmings are accepted at no cost during each one-day event.
The new site will offer additional options of recycling plastics, paper,
aluminum, and glass. Tires will be accepted and recycled. Recycling protects
our environment reducing the quantity of usable items entering the waste
stream, saves limited resources, and creates a better tomorrow for our
children.
The service is available on the first Saturday of the month (holidays excepted) from
8 AM until 2 PM. During these one-day events Collin County will pick up the cost for
disposal of citizens' debris from their residence, but proof of residency, such as a
driver's license or utility bill will be required.
