County campus expansion projects are underway

Construction crews have begun the first of six building projects scheduled for Collin County in the next four years, including improvements and expansion for the county jail, and moving the county's health care services and medical examiner into new buildings on the main campus.

A new book-in/Housing building for the jail is first on the list, with a 2-story, 90,000-square-foot building designed to handle projected Book-in processing needs for the Sheriff's Office for the next 25 years. The first floor will be the new book-in area for processing inmates, and contain enough stations to double the intake ability of the current area. The second floor contains housing units that will hold 180 beds that to be used for orientation of newly processed inmates or for permanent housing. This building is being funded from the 2007 facilities bond package

The remaining five projects are made possible by American Recovery Act funds, which are listed here. This also includes a new central plant, and new facilities for the county's' health department, the medical examiner, and aaded parking. A new 450-bed infirmary for the county jail is also in the works.

Meanwhile, on the east side of the county, contractors are working to finish a new Justice of the Peace facility in Lavon that had to be constructed after a hail storm virtually demolished a building the county leased for Precinct 2 business. That building is expected to open in late April.
