The Collin County Sheriff’s Office is now taking applications for its Citizens Academy, which runs from Jan. 26 to April 26. Those interested can get a copy of the application here.

Class size is limited and this popular course fills up fast, so we suggest you get your application in soon.

The Citizens Academy is a 45-hour block of instruction designed to give the citizens of Collin County a working knowledge of the Sheriff's Office personnel, policies and procedures. It consists of 13 classes held once a week for three hours. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a different area of the Sheriff's Office each week. Certified police officers and personnel with expertise in different sections of the Sheriff's Office, as well as guest instructors, will conduct each instructional block.

The curriculum covers diverse topics, such as communications, training, criminal investigations, criminal law, DWI investigations, family violence, narcotics enforcement, tactical operations, hostage negotiations, jail operations and firearms/weapons use. Emphasis is placed on the patrol section because it is the segment that comes in contact most frequently with the community.

The academy was created to increase law enforcement awareness, dispel suspicions and misconceptions and increase law enforcement/community rapport through the educational process. The Sheriff's Office, in turn, becomes more aware of the concerns of the community from the interaction and input. It is indeed a two-way learning experience.

The class is comprised of a cross-section of citizens from Collin County. Any interested citizen who resides or works in Collin County is encouraged to be a part of this program. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Applications must be returned to the Collin County Sheriff’s Office. There are limited openings, so spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. A $48 fee for a shirt is required after an applicant has been accepted. Do not include the shirt fee with your application. Payment is required on opening night. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance prior to the academy.

If you are accepted, you will receive instructional materials related to the law enforcement mission of the Collin County Sheriff’s Office. As such, some of the material will be of a privileged or confidential nature. Because of the sensitivity of this information, it is necessary for the Collin County Sheriff’s Office to conduct background checks. Please answer the questions as accurately and completely. Any intentional misrepresentation or omission of facts will be grounds for denial of admission to the academy, or if already enrolled, immediate termination. A criminal history check will be made for everyone applying.
