How do I apply for a job with Collin County?

Current employees must use their PeopleSoft login and apply through their Self Service homepage.

External candidates may apply through our Careers page. You can access the page HERE, then click "Apply Now." You must create a profile with a username and login in order to submit an application. Please be sure to retain your username and login, and note the email address you used to register, as this is what you will use for password help should you need it in the future.

You may apply for any position we have posted for which you meet the minimum qualifications. Some jobs have pre-screening questions to determine eligibility. Please read through and answer the questions carefully so that you are not screened out in error. You may include a resume, cover letter, and other attachments with your application; however these are not considered a substitute for filling out the work history, education, and other relevant sections of the application.

Is Human Resources the same as Human Services?

Human Resources and Human Services are two different departments. The Collin County Human Resources office is the personnel department for County employees, handling employee benefits, compensation, payroll, recruiting, safety, and risk functions.

Human Services is state-run organization that provides financial, health, and human services such as medical care, food stamps, and cash assistance to people in need. If you need assistance from Human Services click here, or call (972) 542-0221 or Metro (972) 562-5832.

How do I complete the online application?

​After registering for an account on our site, you may apply for jobs. Click the "Apply" button on the posting to get started. Our application guides you through a series of screens to complete, including work history, education and licenses, sourcing and reference information, and a questionnaire. Click the Save button frequently to prevent any data loss.

We require candidates to list at least 10 years of work history.

Unpaid internships and volunteer work that is listed in the work history section will need to have the salary entered as $1, as our system will not accept a zero amount.

You must also detail any gaps in employment that are greater than two weeks in duration. We have a question that specifically asks this – please be sure to answer it fully.

If you choose to submit a resume, the dates and titles must match your online application exactly. Uploading a resume is not considered a substitute for completing the application per the requirements outlined above.

Our questionnaire includes questions that ask for responses in a certain format; for example, if you provide a certain multiple choice answer, you might be instructed to provide certain pieces of information. Please read through all questions carefully and be sure to answer each item as required.

What happens after I submit my application?

After you submit your application, it becomes available to the hiring manager for that job. Hiring managers are dispersed throughout the various departments in the County. They will review applications submitted to their job posting and contact those they wish to move into the interview and hiring process.

Unfortunately, due to the volume of applicants we receive, you may not hear directly from hiring personnel if you are not selected for an interview. You can monitor the status of your application by logging into your account and going to My Applications.

You can continue to apply for jobs that interest you using the same account. Your application will not be automatically applied to other positions, so please check back regularly for new postings. You can also set up a saved search that will notify you at your registered email address if a job with a keyword matching your search gets posted.

How do I edit my application after I submit it?

​​Our system is designed to accept and retain each application without the ability to edit that specific submission. If you notice you have made an error and wish to correct your application, you can submit a new application to the same job. The hiring manager will be able to see which is your most recent application.

The posting says I need a typing test. What does that require?

Some positions require typing as an essential part of the job. For those positions, we need to ensure you are able to meet a minimum typing requirement to effectively do that job. You cannot be hired for one of these roles until you pass the typing test at the required rate for that job.

Typing tests are administered at the Human Resources office any time between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday thru Friday. No appointment is necessary. You are allowed to take up to three, five-minute tests in one day. We will keep your best score. Test times vary depending on the number of tests you take and your typing speed. Typing tests generally require 10 to 20 minutes.

What is the interview and hiring process like?

​The interview process is determined on a departmental level. Some departments conduct panel interviews with multiple people present at once; others conduct one-on-one interviews. If you have been contacted about an interview but aren't sure what to expect, reach out to your contact and ask for more information on the interview format.

Preparing for your interview is an important step. Think of projects, issues, challenges, successes and failures from your prior work experience and be prepared to discuss how those would apply to the job you are being considered for.

Just as each department conducts interviews differently, the hiring process can also differ by department. Some departments have multiple steps in the hiring process including skills tests, background checks, polygraphs, psychological evaluations, functional physical capacity assessments for jobs involving more physical demands, and other steps.

All departments send employees to the Collin County Employee Health Clinic for a post-offer, pre-employment physical. If you accept an offer at the County, you must complete and pass this physical, and any other required steps as well as approval by Commissioners Court in order to begin employment. All job offers are conditional pending successful completion of these steps.

We do our best to move through the hiring process as quickly as possible for the benefit of everyone involved; however, it can take several weeks after a conditional job offer to complete all the required steps.

Upon finalizing the pre-employment hiring process, candidates with job offers will be scheduled for On-Boarding, Orientation, and first day of work! You will be required to present legally acceptable identification and/or work authorization paperwork. The most common forms presented are a driver's license and social security card.

How do I know you are going to keep my personal information safe?

​​Collin County takes the safety of your sensitive personal information very seriously. To ensure your information is safe, we strictly limit access to sensitive personal and health information to only those who absolutely must have that information. Our systems for personnel and health information are separate, and we use data masking where appropriate to further limit access to personal information. The County further complies with the Public Information Act and withholds any applicable information created by Act exemptions when fulfilling PIA requests. Do I have to be a US Citizen to be hired?

Collin County only hires individuals authorized to work in the United States. In general, you do not have to be a US citizen to work for Collin County (unless it is required for a licensed position such as TCOLE Peace Officer license); however, you do have to be authorized to work in the US. In compliance with federal regulation, every employee is required to complete an Employment Verification Certification (Form I-9). Documentation must be provided within 3 working days of your hire date. The most common forms of identification provided are a US passport or a driver's license and a social security card.

Most positions do not require you to be a Collin County resident to be employed.
