Body

Longtime Probate Court Judge Weldon Copeland announced his retirement on Jan. 31, 2024, after serving the county for more than three decades. During his 35 years as a public servant, Judge Copeland took tremendous pride in his role within the community, often going beyond the duties of his position to connect with the citizens of the county.

“The opportunity to have served as the Judge of the Collin County Probate Court -- and County Court at Law #1 -- for the past thirty-five years has been the greatest honor of my professional life," Judge Copeland said in a letter to the Commissioners Court.

The judge's retirement during his term will prompt the Commissioners Court to select and appoint a new judge for the Probate Court bench.

Interested applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizen of U.S., age 25 or older
  • Must be a resident of Collin County for at least 2 years
  • Must be a licensed attorney who has practiced law or served as a judge for 5 years
