If you’ve ever wondered what drives someone to pursue a career as a medical examiner, Dr. Elizabeth Ventura has a straightforward answer: “It may sound weird, but I’ve wanted to do autopsies since high school.” Inspired by the forensic shows that were all the rage back then such as CSI, Dr. Ventura set her sights on a career that combines science, investigation, and a meaningful impact on families during their most difficult times.
For the past 12 years, Dr. Ventura has honed her skills at the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office, where she completed her fellowship and worked there on staff. “Dallas is a busy office, with cases not just from the county but from surrounding areas too. The variety of cases and mentorship from my former Chief prepared me well for this new role.” And now, thanks to a series of perfectly timed events, she’s bringing her expertise to Collin County.
“Coming here wasn’t something I planned,” Dr. Ventura admits. “But the opportunity came at the right time, and everything just fell into place.” What excites her most? The chance to lead a team and take on new challenges that push her both professionally and personally.
Dr. Ventura’s work is all about compassion. She finds the greatest reward in helping families find closure by providing answers about their loved ones’ passing. It’s serious and sometimes heavy work, but she approaches it with the heart of someone who truly cares about making a difference.
Outside of work, life for Dr. Ventura is all about her three kids. If she’s not helping with homework, she’s likely cooking, cleaning, or chauffeuring her crew to games and practices. “My daughter says I must actually enjoy cleaning because I’m always asking them to help. She might have a point,” she says with a laugh.
Dr. Ventura describes herself as a “neat freak,” “zealous” goal-setter, and “master organizer,” a trio of traits that come in handy both at home and in the workplace. Oh, and don’t be surprised if she dominates the office ping-pong tournament—she’s a self-proclaimed tennis and ping-pong pro.
Her current TV obsession? Documentaries, especially murder mysteries (no surprise there). And if she weren’t in the medical field? “It was always going to be something medical. If not a doctor, then probably a nurse.”
We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Ventura to the Collin County family. She brings not just her impressive expertise but also her genuine passion for the work she does. Please join us in making her feel at home—her expertise, enthusiasm, and heart make her a perfect fit for Collin County.
