Arrest Made: Impersonating Law Enforcement in Phone Scam and Defrauding Citizens
[Collin County, Texas] - In response to a November 2023 incident, the Collin County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Unit, in collaboration with the Houston County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, successfully apprehended Jolisa Maybin, a suspect involved in a scam targeting a Collin County resident.
Maybin impersonated a Collin County Sheriff's Deputy, leading to the fraudulent extraction of approximately $5,000 from a local resident. She falsely claimed that the victim had ignored a subpoena and coerced them to pay a fine over the phone to avoid arrest.
After an extensive analysis of digital evidence, it was determined that Maybin was located in Dothan, Alabama. On February 21, 2024, the Collin County Special Operations Unit, in collaboration with the Houston County Sheriff's Office, executed a search warrant at Maybin's residence. Numerous electronics were seized, and in an interview, Maybin admitted to using her bank accounts to siphon money from the Collin County victim. She disclosed that she not only withdrew funds but also orchestrated the transfer of the fraudulently obtained money to other accounts under her control.
As a result of the investigation, the Collin County Sheriff's Office secured two felony arrest warrants for Maybin: theft of greater than $2,500 and less than $30,000 with a bond set at $100,000 and impersonating a public servant with a bond set at $150,000. Simultaneously, the Houston County Sheriff's Office obtained arrest warrants for Maybin as a Fugitive from Justice and took her into custody.
Currently held at the Houston County Jail in Dothan, Alabama, Maybin awaits extradition back to Collin County to face charges of theft and impersonation of a public servant.
Sheriff Skinner stated, "We're determined to catch and punish those who try to take advantage of our citizens. This suspect thought they could use the trusted name of law enforcement to target innocent people. But we showed last Wednesday that we'll find them, no matter where they try to hide."
The Collin County Sheriff's Office extends its gratitude to the Houston County Sheriff's Office in Alabama for their collaboration and assistance in swiftly bringing Maybin to justice.
