Citizens Academy

The Sheriff's Office Citizens Academy is offered once a year. Start dates vary based on staffing and public interest.

If you're a resident of Collin County and want to learn more about law enforcement operations and the internal processes of the Collin County Sheriff's Office, you can participate in the annual Citizens Academy. The Citizens Academy is open to people aged 18 and above who either live or work in Collin County. Its main objective is to enhance law enforcement/community relations through a structured educational program.

The Citizens Academy will present a wide range of topical training subjects condensed from the standard training curriculum of Sheriff's Deputies. By presenting this program, we hope to provide a broad educational experience that will familiarize attending citizens with the mission of Sheriff's Office personnel and the requirements of the law to which officers must conform while carrying out their prescribed duties.

Through attendance and participation in the Citizens Academy,

  • Citizens will be able to make more informed judgments about the Sheriff's Office and law enforcement activities.

  • The Sheriff's Office will become more aware of the feelings and concerns of the community, as expressed by attending citizens.

  • Citizens and Sheriff's representatives will have an opportunity to explore some of the traditional suspicions and misconceptions generally harbored by both citizens and Sheriff's Deputies. Through open discussion of such suspicions and misconceptions, a more harmonious climate for relationships may be established.

The Academy is offered on an annual basis and the start dates may vary depending on staffing and citizen demand. This program spans over a period of seven weeks, with sessions being conducted twice a week during the evening hours from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Specific days for the classes are decided before the start of each academy. The training sessions will be conducted at the Collin County Sheriff's Office situated at 4300 Community Avenue, McKinney, TX 75071, in the training classroom.

Each week will focus on a different aspect of the Sheriff's Office, with tours of the award-winning Detention Facility, as well as demonstrations by the DRT team, dive team, and K-9 unit. The participants will represent a cross-section of the Collin County community. The long-range benefit of the interaction that will take place during the academy is a better Collin County for all citizens.
